Internship Guidelines Made Familiar

 

PROCEDURE FOR REGISTRATION AS A VETERINARY MEDICINE OR ANIMAL HEALTH INTERN (2025)

 

STEP ONE. REGISTRATION WITH THE KENYA VETERINARY BOARD

The process of applying for internship is now done through the Practitioners Management System. Kindly read the user guide on the application process

STEP TWO: REGISTRATION WITH THE DIRECTORATE OF VETERINARY SERVICES

After receiving the certificate of registration as an intern from KVB, apply to the Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS) by filling the DVS Internship application form. For any clarification or enquiries on the DVS Internship application form, use the following email vetinternship@kilimo.go.ke 

 

The DVS will communicate the date for placement of successful applicants through the email address in due course.

 

 

 

 

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ON INTERNSHIP

Question: What is veterinary internship program (VIP)?

Answer: A veterinary internship is a mandatory 52 week, supervised practical training program for Animal Health and Veterinary Medicine graduates undertaken in an accredited internship centre and is a prerequisite for registration.

 

Question: Who is eligible for the internship?

Answer: Graduates with a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVM) or qualifications in Animal Health (Degree, Diploma, or Certificate) who have been indexed from KVB-accredited institutions.

 

Question: What are the requirements for the internship?

Answer: Certified academic certificates, Index number, fill online application form for registration of internship (Form 40), Upload duly filled Veterinary Surgeons or Veterinary Paraprofessionals oath, National ID, proof of payment for registration fee as provided for in Form 31.

 

Question: What are the roles of KVB, DVS, and SDLD in the VIP?

Answer: The Kenya Veterinary Board

  • Develop and reviews guidelines for VIP.
  • Registration of interns
  • Accreditation of internship centres.
  • Appointment of intern supervisors
  • Quality assurance of VIP.

 

Answer: The Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS)

  • Implementation of VIP.
  • Placement of interns
  • Technical support during internship.  

 

Answer: The State Department for Livestock Development (SDLD)

  • Declares vacancies for VIP
  • Processing of Human Resource documents.

 

Question: Who pays intern stipends?

Answer: Stipends for Government- sponsored interns is paid from the exchequer through SDLD, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development.

 

Question: What happens after completing the internship?

AnswerSubmit to KVB the following:

  • Duly filled logbook
  • Duly filled Form 42
  • Internship Assessment Forms

 

Question: If one is already working, do you go for internship?

Answer: If you graduated from the year 2016 to date and have never gone for internship, you must apply to be registered as an intern and undertake a one-year internship program. This applies even if you are working.

 

Question: Must one have the original KCSE Certificate?

Answer: Yes. Attach a certified copy of the original KCSE certificate . Also note that the KCSE result slip is not admissible.

 

Question: Can one register with ID Waiting Card?

Answer: No. Attach a certified copy of the original National ID Card. No waiting cards or birth certificates shall be accepted during application for registration.

 

Question: Can one be placed in an organization of your choice?

Answer: The Directorate of Veterinary Services (DVS) is responsible for placement. Any questions regarding placement should be directed there.

 

Question: Where can I get my KVB Index Number

Answer: Contact the Registrar from your training institution.
